At this event I felt a shift towards that hope he was struggling to express his feeling about. TEDx – independently organized TED events – bring him hope because they can bring into view to what may otherwise be invisible; ideas that offer questions, answers, and HOPE.
The creation of a space of openness, inclusion and vulnerability felt unprecedented for myself until walking into TEDFest. After I took a moment to soak it all in, I found myself taking a deep breath of unfamiliar calmness. Later, I felt it as I sat here at home waiting for my ride home from the airport in strange quiet tears that sprang from my eyes like flowers reaching for the sun. People do really care and are creating that safe space to make change happen. It is possible to be a contributor, to make an impact, to be a part of something bigger. Oh wait…we are a part of something bigger and we are designing in that space every day.
The wonderful opportunity about a TEDx Experience is that it is all about the audience. We tell that to speakers all the time but, as organizers, I feel we fail to express it enough publicly. The beauty especially about a smaller local event is that it is not hard to know the audience, they are your neighbors – you are the audience. That is why I asked the community what topics they would like to see covered. Not many people noticed but the ask was in exchange for winning two tickets to the event. This is the winner:
Tickets will be released on May 1st for the first TEDxSolanaBeach to be held on August 25th, 2018 at the North Coast Repertory Theater.
